Art Gallery wins architecture award

Award for Art Gallery

The architect who designed the Te Manawa Art Gallery, the late David Taylor, has been honoured with the New Zealand Institute of Architects’ award for Enduring Architecture.

This award is given to buildings that have remained relevant for more that 25 years, represented a significant design achievement when they were first constructed, and continue to benefit their surrounding communities.

“Recognition such as this is significant,” said Palmerston North Mayor Grant Smith to a large audience at the award ceremony on 20 May. “It’s quite special that our buildings should be singled out. They’re important landmarks that relate to Palmy and the people who live here.”

“It’s a great recognition of David Taylor’s work,” said Te Manawa Chief Executive Andy Lowe. “It’s fantastic that his legacy houses a diverse programme of exhibitions and displays of, by and for the community, that continues to evolve to this day.”

Taylor designed the building in 1976 for construction the following year. Influenced primarily by the Australian National Gallery in Canberra, but also by the Bauhaus movement, Taylor set out to make the best possible use of the space available on a tight budget.

David Taylor’s wife Margaret accepted the award on behalf of her husband.

“My fascination with architecture was enormous,” she said. “David was a remarkable designer. I love this building.”

The Art Gallery will mark its 45th birthday in 2022.
