The Art Gallery as we know it today was constructed in 1977 on Main St with funds raised by the Te Manawa Art Society (formerly the Manawatū Art Society) and became part of the Te Manawa complex more than 20 years ago. The society supports the Gallery’s continued service to the people of Palmerston North to this day.
It showcases a range of styles from both established and emerging local, national and international artists.
General admission to the Art Gallery is free.
Points of interest:
An ever-changing schedule of exhibitions of local, national and international artists keeps the gallery as a place that inspires through creativity and storytelling. The Gallery also houses the Te Manawa art collection on behalf of the people of Palmerston North. These works have been collected over time for the City by the Te Manawa Museums Trust and the Te Manawa Art Society.
Te Manawa has long been committed to collecting work by significant New Zealand artists, with a particular interest in emerging artists, works by Māori and Polynesian artists and works that relate to Manawatū.
Nau mai, haere mai. If you haven’t been in before, now is a good time to discover some of the inspiring work inside.
