Voices of Gallipoli

23 April 2023 @ 1:30 pm - 2:30 pm

The story of Gallipoli – told by those who were there

Voices of Gallipoli (by Maurice Shadbolt and adapted by Arthur Meek) is a collection of verbatim testimonies from veterans who fought at Gallipoli and lived to tell the tale.

Join us at Te Manawa to hear three of them spoken out loud as a welcome act of remembrance.

This presentation is part of an international project to remember the lives of Kiwis at war by speaking their words out loud at Anzac commemorations and events.

In a collaboration between Centrepoint Theatre, Palmerston North City Council and Te Manawa, Voices of Gallipoli is a collection of verbatim testimonies from veterans who fought at Gallipoli and lived to tell the tale. These testimonies were told to Maurice Shadbolt nearly seven decades after the last shot in the campaign was fired. For many of the elderly soldiers, it was their first and last chance to tell their remarkable tales of suffering and survival. These recollections tell how humble and mostly simple New Zealanders lived and died on Turkey’s Gallipoli peninsula for eight months in the year of 1915.

Free  |  An international event to remember NZ soldiers who fought at Gallipoli will be staged free to the public in Palmerston North over Anzac Day Weekend. As well as Palmerston North similar events will be hosted in places from Dunedin to London.
